PhD candidate and IRCHSS post-graduate scholarship holder. Research topic: ‘Irish medical missionary nuns in Africa 1920-1960’: this study will use oral history and archival research to give an insight as to how the gender, nationality and religious identities of Irish female missionaries shaped their practice of obstetrics in Africa between 1920 and 1960. Other areas of interest: Feminist theory, Gender and National Identity, Medical History, Irish Diaspora, Post-colonialism.

Government of Ireland Scholar 
Funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Currently completing a PhD in Hispanic Studies within the School of Languages, Literature, Culture and Communication at the University of Limerick. Aisling’s PhD research focuses on women during the civil war and Franco dictatorship in Spain and contemporary representations of this historical period. Her thesis title is “Gender and Memory in Contemporary Women's Writing from Spain”. Broadly speaking, Aisling’s research interests lie in the area of women’s history and memorialisation in Spain and Ireland. Aisling has been a Sibéal board member since 2010. During this time, Aisling acted as Sibéal Communications Officer (2010-2011), organised the Sibéal-sponsored feminist event “Memories of the Magdalene Laundries” in April 2011, and was part of the organising committee of the 4th Annual Conference of Sibéal, which was hosted by the University of Limerick in November 2011. Aisling is currently serving as an Outreach Officer for Sibéal, which involves liaising with other feminist organisations and co-ordinating the Sibéal Small Grants Scheme. Aisling is happy to be contacted by any individual or organisation who would like further information about Sibéal, the activities of the network, or about the Small Grants Scheme.

University of Ulster, Law/Transitional Justice Institute

Third-year PhD candidate, research examines violence against women in the aftermath of conflict with case studies on Northern Ireland, Liberia and Timor-Leste. Worked for a number of years as a consultant providing technical support services to international governmental and non-governmental organisations on issues of women, violence, conflict and international development. Spent over 7 years in Africa and South East Asia working on international aid and development programmes. Areas of interest includes gender equality, violence against women, women, peace and security.

PhD candidate in NUI Galway's Global Women's Studies Programme and a Galway fellowship holder. Research Areas: For her thesis she is researching Moroccan women's NGOs' advocacy campaigns and their impact on women's rights development in the country. Her research interests include Muslim feminism(s), violence against women and women's movements.

PhD candidate looking at the writing of Anne Enright, conceptions of women and motherhood in a particular framework, language as a gendered tool, the effect of language on bodies as represented in Enright and Joyce and the existence of Enright’s work on a female counter narrative to Joyce’s modernism.

Holds a LLB in Law with Government from the University of Ulster. PhD candidate researching domestic abuse and the potential employment of restorative justice principals in dealing with it. Focus includes identity politics, namely around gendered subjectivities, Focauldian memory, post-structuralist discourse analysis and progressive resistance. PhD to be completed October 2012.
